Includes a special focus from the perspective of the native and immigrant population. The Gold Rush Based on the PBS documentary, this site highlights the primary issues of the era with quotes from historical figures and selections from the writings of contemporary authors and historians. Includes fun facts and recommended links. Books Blashfield, Jean Describes the adventures and disasters of people who rushed to the gold mines of California in 1848 and explains how this event sparked the state’s development. Good quality illustrations. (grades 3-5) The California Gold Rush: West with the Forty-Niners Van Steenwyck, Elizabeth A vivid retelling of the Gold Rush era, from Sutter’s arrival in California in 1839 to glimpses of such pioneers as Levi Strauss and Mark Hopkins. Includes color prints and maps. (grades 3-6) Ketchum, Liza Illustrates the event which drew thousands of people to California and its effect on the gold seekers, the Spanish settlers and the native Indian tribes who lived there. Illustrated with archival photographs and reproductions. Based on the PBS series, “The West”. (grades 5-8) Schanzer, Rosalyn Uses colorful, lighthearted illustrations and excerpts from letters, journals, and newspaper articles to relate the story of the California Gold Rush. (grades 3-5) Blumberg, Rhoda The spirit of the forty-niners is brought to life through this exciting account of the era. Includes selections from letters, diaries and newspapers as well as reproductions of period cartoons and posters. (grades 4-8) Databases The Gale Student Resource Center is designed for middle school and high school students. However the database does have information that may be useful for 4th and 5th graders.
